Mondelez Tesco Checkout

Mondelez Tesco Checkout

My role:
Research, site visit, concept sketches, collaborating with 3D studio

Project overview:
During my time as a visual designer for Link Design Studios, we were commissioned by Mondelez International (Cadbury) to create a design for the checkout area in Tesco supermarkets. It was one of my favourite projects to work on because one of the goals of the point-of-sale shelving system was to promote their confectionary products. As a self-confessed chocoholic, this was a welcome challenge.

After visiting some Tesco supermarkets with my managers and taking photographs of the checkout areas for context, I used these visual references to sketch up ideas for how to showcase Mondelez products while also considering how other items such as gifts cards, chewing gum, leaflets, bags of sweets, and magazines would fit in. Additionally, I had to think about accommodating a focus area for bigger products and consider where signage could be attached. I also thought about a designated area for shopping baskets and grocery bags to be stored neatly.

Keeping the theme of chocolate in mind, I used curved lines as a fun way to represent flowing melted chocolate. This style lent itself to having dynamic levels in the shelving which was eye-catching and engaging.

Mondelez and Tesco were happy with my concept sketches, so with their go-ahead we proceeded with the next phase of the project and worked with a 3D studio to create mock-ups of my design. We worked side-by-side to ensure these images closely represented my original concept and we agreed to some tweaks based on their advice and experience with similar shelving systems.

Upon seeing the 3D rendering, Mondelez and Tesco were both delighted with the solution for the new checkout area and proceeded to manufacture a full prototype which was installed in one of Tescos largest flagship stores in Dublin.
