Looksee Magazine

Looksee Magazine

My role:
Research, writing content, visual design, photography, illustration, layout, typography, hand-sewn magazine

Project overview:
‘Looksee’ was a conceptual graphic design journal I created for a college project. Following a brief set by the International Society of Typographic Designers, the task was to develop a design solution based on the theme of ‘City types’.

Dublin city, at the time, was going through an interesting phase in the property market. In response to the brief I wrote a short piece that poked fun at the advertising campaigns around the city which featured images of affluent men and women enjoying an indulgent lifestyle. It was all a bit eye-rolling and out of reach for the average person looking for an affordable new home in a half-decent location.

With humour in mind I titled the article ‘The hard sell’. I used a photograph of typography from the entrance to the property development on the front and back cover of the magazine.

The article pages featured line drawings of contemporary furniture, the kind I imagined would adorn the extravagant new properties that the article commented on.

I created the magazine prototype by stitching the pages together by hand and carefully applying the cover with adhesive. As we spend so much time on our computers, It’s really satisfying working on projects that involve designing with different medium - combining being creative with photography, typography, and illustration with making physical pieces by hand, exploring and manipulating different materials.
